I was always better at catching the souls of poems than I am at convincing them to tell me their names. From the animistic practice of Shinto, and possibly from other animistic traditions as well, there emerges a belief that words have not only power but a spirit. The words we write and speak hold energy and history, a transgenerational memory. This is why, like many magical people, I try to choose my words with care. This poem emerged from a great humming that came upon me. Oftentimes this occurs during meditative and cleansing activities like cleaning the dishes. The humming this time was so insistent that it started before I even got to the sink. It was a beautiful melody that I wish I could remember or could have captured somehow. But recording it at the time felt like folly, and the process of handwriting the melody sans instruments is laborious and slow. So I allowed the song to dance through me, bubbling and turning in that familiar way until all I had left were words. Even those tried to squirm away at the last minute, but I set them down on paper before they could. These words speak to an ancient yet familiar ache from a peoples who forgot their language, their gods, their very names.
