This song is written all about my trusty 1990 Toyota van, that has quite the story and is a long way from home! It was owned by my best friend Ed, and after he died his family shipped it back from Oz and gave it to me in the U.K. Every time I drive this van I catch myself grinning ear to ear. I feel weirdly close to Ed when I drive it – it really represents his curious and adventurous nature, allowing me to remember years of memories at the same time as I create new ones out on the road. When I found the logo that allowed me to track down the original owner of the van, it unlocked a new perspective that reframed my whole relationship to it. I already knew how much it meant to me, and how important it has been to help me grieve in an active way. But suddenly I zoomed out a bit, and was imagining all the other people who had travelled in this characterful 36-year-old van, having the time of their lives up and down the east coast of Oz. I imagined Ed doing the same, achieving the dream that he worked so hard to achieve. I imagined the trip that we should have had in it together, if it weren’t for Covid grounding my flight. It throws up mixed feelings but ultimately it’s exciting to think about. As the lyrics ask:“how many times have these keys changed hands on the east coast?
