These are the Upper Egyptian nomes (administrative divisions) 1 - 11. Some notes: On the maps I marked the positions of the nomes' capitals, but not the nomes' geographical borders as they sometimes changed and are not always known in detail today. Each nome has a symbol representing the nome's name. The reading isn't always completely clear which is why I'm only reading the names of the capitals. Though the nomes' names are often identical to the capitals' names. Some nomes' capitals changed over time. I only chose one in each case. Many of the preserved Arabic names are obsolete and are only found in older literature. Some of them also refer to places that aren't at the exact same position as the ancient place, but rather nearby. In most cases the ancient pronunciation is well-preserved thanks to Akkadian, Greek, and Coptic attestations. In a few cases it was quite a stretch, most notably Eileithyiaspolis (el-Kab). In some cases a Late Egyptian vowel í in a closed syllable may have been ú and vice versa. These aren't always easy to reconstruct. The Coptic name of Thebes (ⲛⲏ) goes back to some alternative Egyptian names of Thebes: nú amáne (The City of Amun), nú rúse (The Southern City) or simply nú (The City), also attested in Akkadian and Hebrew. In Arabic, the Greek name Θῆβαι (Thêbai) is also preserved as طيبة (ṭība).
