I WAS DISQUALIFIED FROM GRADUATING WITH LATIN HONORS BECAUSE I WAS A SHIFTEE. My General Weighted Average (GWA) was 1.5—with no failing grades, no dropped subjects, and no incomplete marks. I entered college during the pandemic era. I initially applied for BS in Tourism Management but was not interviewed for the program. Instead, I was interviewed and accepted into my second-choice course, BS in Entrepreneurship. In the second semester of my first year, I was given the opportunity to shift to my desired course. I was told I would still be eligible for Latin honors since I had a 1.3 GWA during my first semester and was shifting within the same college—so I grabbed that chance. Well, despite being a shiftee, I still graduated on time. I maintained my GWA throughout because I believed I would still be considered for Latin honors. Still, no regrets. In my first year, I was elected as FCO Auditor II, joined An Lantawan as a photojournalist, and served as the General Auditor of JJC-LNU. During my second year, I was elected as SCO Auditor I. In my third year, I got elected as TC Treasurer for our program, and became a member of the Association of Student Tour Guides (ASTG). Now, in my final year, I served as the President of LNU-EASE—a newly accredited organization under the Events Management specialization. Aside from being a student leader, I was also a working student. I worked as an online seller, a freelance photographer, a male voice actor, a call center agent, and an event organizer. I received no formal recognition, but I gained people who truly understand the hardship I went through, and for them, I deserve that laude. I'm truly grateful! I appealed for reconsideration for Latin honors, but it was not granted due to having taken overload units—even though I maintained the required GWA. “It’s the policy that prevails,” they said. I went through so much in this college journey, and I will always be thankful to those who helped me conquer this diploma. Ma, I’m sorry. I reached the GWA for laude, but our dream of being part of the Latin honors was not granted.
