Here's something intriguing about Icacos, Trinidad that you probably didn't know. Did you know that Icacos was named by the Amerindians after the very prevalent “Fat Pork” shrub called, Chrysobalanus icaco? By the 1820's, Icacos increasingly became an agricultural area with Coconut estates such as the Constance, which till this day, remains the largest on the island. Since then, the area has become more known for fishing. However, the distance of just 7 miles between Icacos and Venezuela, less than a third of the distance between Toco and Tobago, poses a challenge for local fishermen as they often encounter difficulties with the Guardia Nacional. Today, rising global temperatures and coastal erosion are a threat to the splendour of Icacos.
