Edit: hope this didn’t seem like it was the children’s job to attune to Mom; that’s always Dad’s job, and if that doesn’t happen, outsource to therapist so can begin attuning to self (this always requires grief because it’s so not fair to have to do so much of your healing yourself.) One thing is these women HATE doctors (for a different reason than their hopeless husbands hate doctors) and this is a barrier to getting into therapy. Doctor visits are actually sources of pain, not just sources of anxiety. Being dismissed by someone unconsciously experienced as “authority” is just as scary as having someone say there is something “wrong” with you. I actually think the fear of being dismissed and not really understood is the most dysregulating part; like “there is bad in you that needs to be managed” instead of “what’s it like for you?
