I have to repost this due to an error but basically: My thoughts and opinions are heavily influenced by my time navigating society in Asia for over a decade. In my culture, adults have advised me to never betray or reveal emotion, to conform, to be silent, be logical rather than emotional, to avoid sticking out like a sore thumb, and avoid burning bridges because you never know who might meet again in society. This was really jarring for me as someone who grew up in the West, where we are advised to be openly communicative, express our emotions, stand out, and be individualists. It has been interesting to say the least to try to find a balance between the two. My culture advises us that logic should always override emotion, honor overrides freedom, and duty overrides individuality. This has actually helped me in some respects as a young person. The East provided me rules and structure. I noticed that my countrymen tend to keep their troubles to themselves, even to close friends and family because they believe it brings dishonor or they do not want to inconvenience their loved ones by burdening them. But my Western friends have been hurt if I withhold my troubles and try to carry my burdens alone, thinking I do not cherish our bond. I'm grateful for the East for teaching me how to be logical, how to control my emotions and rise above them, and for the West for teaching me about mental health and emotional intelligence and communication.
