We made some new friends this weekend: Jeffrey, Susan, Moris, and Betty—just to name a few. No, not new neighbours (though we met plenty of those too). These were the names my daughter gave the petting zoo animals at the Hamptons Community League event. She beelined straight to the animals and spent most of the afternoon carefully naming each one like they were old friends, completely unaware of the hot chocolate calling my name or the fire pit waiting for a perfectly roasted hot dog (which, for the record, was calling her older sister’s name). And for a certain kid I know, it’s making sure every goat and bunny has a proper name. Whatever it looks like, it all comes down to the same thing: having a space to show up, connect, and just be part of something.
