He messaged and chatted, he typed “You’re the one!” But dates came and fizzled like cans in the sun. Then one midnight, under moon’s silver gleam, He met “MittensOnline92” who seemed sweeter than cream. They texted in rhymes, they laughed, they found rhythm— Mittens said, “Meet me,” but left not a prism. Captain McPurr checked every alley and lane, He hunted, he followed each virtual train. He combed through the suburbs, he asked Mrs. Finch, He snooped at the café, at the deli, the bench. At last on a doorstep, behind drapes of blue glass, He heard a faint gurgle and felt his heart pass. Now what do I know?” He leapt on the lid with a theatrical splash, Though usually water would ruin his sash. The fish did a flip and the bubbles did chatter. “I’m sorry,” it bubbled, “I’m not what you’d rather. I wanted attention, I wanted to play, So I dressed in their profile to brighten my day.” Captain McPurr coughed a small sneeze, then a purr, He realized his search had a wobble and blur. He’d been chasing ideals like a toy on a string— Expecting a portrait of perfect-purr-ring. “You’re clever,” he said, “you’re bright, and you sing— But a fish can’t curl whiskers or sleep on your wing.” The fish made a face that was honestly true: “I lied to get love, but I learned something too.” So Captain McPurr sat, as the moon hummed a tune, And saw his own cravings reflected in the lagoon. “Maybe I’m hunting the wrong kind of dream— Perhaps I was catfishing myself with a scheme.” He let the fish go (in a bowl-to-bowl swap), Gave it a snack and a cardboard box-top.
