For my 50th birthday, my son bought me a @metaquest virtual reality headset. I had been wanting one for quite some time, but I honestly didn’t know how I would actually use it. I just thought it would be cool. 🤣🤣 But within a few weeks, I had it all figured out. I was playing games, meditating, even visiting unique locations across the globe. One evening, I stumbled up on a game that allowed you to explore various neighborhoods. There was no goal in the game aside from walking around and checking out the sights. Somehow, I was given a dog to walk. I don’t know whose dog it was, but the dog was with me for the entire evening in the game. We visited ice cream shops, went to the ocean, even made a new friend. A few months after that, I started my own walking journey and found myself walking my own dog in my neighborhood! I have been procrastinating for many years about forming a walking habit, but now I was suddenly out and about, and it felt natural. Familiar, even. I realized that these virtual reality headsets could possibly be used for what people call exposure therapy. A way to experience something that maybe you are fearful of while in a safe location like your recliner in your living room. If you start there, and build up your confidence, then maybe you can step out into the real world and do it in real time. That’s exactly what I did! You can use it in so many ways, I even use it to do my readings and view presentations for my doctoral program, and I can also use it in my daily work.
