When was the first time you saw someone on a cartoon who looked like you? I remember! It was this cartoon, produced by Sesame Street. The concept was simple: a little brown girl is given a list of items to get from the local store. When I look back on this cartoon now I realize that she was a direct influence of our Gabby character! Gabby has a yellow bow in her hair and a yellow dress, and she spends the day with her mother! Even though the segment was only two minutes, it taught six year old me a few very important lessons: 💛 when you need help, ask! When the child got to the store and forgot one of the items, she turns to the camera and ask us! I remember screaming at our little black and white TV: BUTTER!!!!! 💛 Believe in yourself and your abilities! When her mother asked if she wanted her to write the list down so she would not forget, a little girl said no mommy! I’ll remember! 💛 She received regular encouragement and congratulations on a job well done: When she returns from the store with the items, she tells her mother she did not forget!
