Rest in Peace to Ronnie Rondell Jr., the veteran Hollywood stuntman best known for being set on fire on the cover of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here,” who has died at 88. Born in Hollywood in 1937, Rondell served in the U.S. Navy before embarking on a career that spanned more than five decades and over 100 film and television credits, including Blazing Saddles, Lethal Weapon, Thelma & Louise, and The Matrix Reloaded. He also co-founded the stunt collective Stunts Unlimited in 1970, helping shape the future of action filmmaking. His most iconic moment came in 1975, when he donned a fireproof suit and was set ablaze for the Wish You Were Here album cover, shot on the Warner Bros. backlot. The image took 15 takes, and during the final attempt, a gust of wind singed his face. Photographer Aubrey Powell later recalled Rondell’s hesitation, quoting him saying, “It’s dangerous for a man to stand still on fire. Normally, you’re running and the fire’s spreading behind you, or you’re falling… but to stand still…?” Powell added, “Ronnie was very gracious about it, considering…” Despite enduring serious injuries throughout his career, Rondell remained committed to his craft and left an indelible mark on film and music history. He passed away on August 12, 2025, at a senior living facility in Osage Beach, Missouri, and is survived by his wife Mary, his son R. A. Rondell, grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and his brother Ric.
