The sounds inside a corn stalk 🌽 I’d been thinking for some time about placing a contact mic directly on a corn stalk, just to hear what kind of sounds it might pick up. I finally had the opportunity to try it on a windy day, which produced deep, low-frequency rumbles as the stalks moved and rubbed against each other. What really caught my attention was a series of finer, higher-pitched vibrations. I hadn’t noticed them by ear, but as soon as the contact mic was placed on the stalk, they became clearly audible in the recording. I tested several plants and these sounds showed up each time. Their intensity varied too: sometimes subtle, sometimes more intense, as if something was shifting closer to the mic. It makes me wonder whether small insects might be responsible.
