Use a higher shutter speed •I typically use between 1/1250 and 1/4000 depending on the bird. For raptors I use 1/2500 to freeze the fast action of them diving down on prey. For perched birds you can lower your shutter speeds. 2. Wide Aperture •Use a wide open aperture to allow as much light to hit the sensor and to increase shutter speeds without using a higher ISO. Some lenses aren’t the sharpest at the widest apeture, typically it’s 2-3 stops from the widest. For example, the Sony 200-600 5.6/6.3 G OSS is sharpest at f/8 at 600mm instead of the widest apeture allowed of f/6.3 at 600mm. 3. Positioning • position yourself upwind from a perched bird or an area birds frequent. Birds land and take off into the wind and this is a great way to get some landing and take-off images. 4. Auto ISO • Change your ISO to auto to allow the camera to increase or decrease as you’re following a bird through the constantly changing light.
