Even though equipped weapons cannot be used, Deepsight Resonance weapons and Shaped weapons will still gain leveling progress if they are equipped when matches end. Scorch Cannons are projectile weapons, so you need to consider the travel time of the projectile when firing at enemies. Scorch Cannons can do damage with direct projectile hits, or from projectile explosions. Holding down the fire button will charge the projectile, and releasing it will detonate it. Moving around in the air can make you harder to hit. If you're trying to hit enemies that are moving around in the air, try to shoot nearby surfaces, like walls or the ground, when they get close to them.
