Replying to @munchasauras rex 🦎 “can I speak freely?” he asks me. I’m not one to deny a vent sesh so I say “of course you can man”. “Everything is so fucked dude” I sigh and reply “I know it fucking sucks” “I can’t believe they would do this.” Confused, and not wanting to question a distressed person I respond: “I know it, I know it” “How did you react when you found out?” Still confused, as if I’m taking part in a conversation that only one of us knows what it’s about and assuming the other one knows what their talking about: I shrug “I don’t know man” I continue along, still really confused. Could he be talking about something the owners/my bosses did? I can’t think of anything of relevance and I don’t want to ask cause at this point I’m still shaken and nervous and I want to help him because he seems on the verge of a mental breakdown and I don’t know what to do. I continue to try empathize with him and say “The world is fucked right now man I totally get you” (this conversation is kind of foggy in my brain right now cause my memory isn’t the best but I’m trying) He sighs and fidgets with his gf’s tea cup and says something that I can’t remember. I assume he might be grieving someone at this point so I try to empathize further and help him out. “Yknow grief is just love that has now where to go anymore, and I mean I’ve recently lost an old friend from middle school who took his life. This past weekend I went to Iowa to go to his “remembrance of life”. It’s hard man, it really is.” In an abrupt turn of the conversation he asks me: “What do YOU want?” I falter a little bit and then give him the honest answer: (at this point his gf had finished in the bathroom and was walking back up) “Idk man, I want to make people happy. Yeah, I want to make people happy, cause that what makes me happy and fulfills me.” He nods at that in appreciation, bottom lip still trembling gf, both elbows leaned on the counter. I was done counting the money now, and some of my closing tasks required me to go to the back. “I’ll be back” I mumbled or something of that sort. He nodded and proceeded to embrace his girlfriend as they swayed to what seemed music I couldn’t hear. Once I came back out Tru and his girlfriend were ready to go. These were his final words to me: “Hey man, I think you’re really cool and funny. And, uhm, if you ever see me in this black hat right here or my purple glasses just know I’m not doing too good, and in that case, say hi to me man. Just be like “hey tru!” say hi to me and like talk to me, talk and make jokes when you see me okay?” “Of course man” I respond. His girlfriend cuts in, “I’m sorry, I forgot your name from when you introduced yourself” “Oh totally okay, I’m Collin, and it’s nice to meet you” “Oh that should be easy to remember, I have a son named Collin!” Tru says with the same trembling lip: “Heh, collin, like “I’ll be callin you”, or “I’m callin Collin” I’m like “yeah exactly dude”. I debate asking tru if he wants a hug or not, or saying “I care about you” but I choose not to. I say my goodbyes and see them out. Bewildered I call my best friend and coworker about what just happened. He groggily listens to what I said since he just woke up. As a week passes, I fill my coworkers in on the interaction and they also remark on the strangeness. Throughout the next two weeks every shift I tentatively wait for tru to come through the doors and ask for a coffee. I start asking coworkers if they’ve seen him or if he’s come in on one of their shifts to no avail. I get more and more worried. On another closing shift I ask my bosses if they’ve seen tru and they say not too. I then later tell them about the interaction and that’s why I was asking after tru. They immediately grow concerned as well, fretting over the fact that they have no contact information for him. They tell me “they’ll be on the lookout.”.
