Five years ago today, our baby was hooked up to all kinds of wires and machines as we held him in a dark room. We watched him for any inkling of a response during an excruciating two-hour long auditory brainstem response test. The words that came after will always be burned in my mind. “I’m sorry, but there was no response.” The words “I’m sorry.” At the time they made sense. My baby couldn’t HEAR. It felt like an enormous loss, something I would have done anything to change the outcome of. Five years later, I’m here to tell you…it wasn’t a loss. Not even close. Instead it’s been a gain — a gain in insight into a community we didn’t know existed, a gain of so many new friends, a gain of experiencing the mundane moments as so much more. Even now, as Cooper chatters his head off during the beloved Car Chats…when I don’t think I can take it any longer, I remind myself of the day we never could have imagined that nonstop little backseat narrator. And sure, my head still might explode, but there’s a layer of gratitude to it that wouldn’t exist otherwise. Cooper, you are the joy of my life. Through and through.
