The invention concerns the problem of early railway wheel surface defects detection. It is known that wheelsets defects are the dominant type of fault in railway vehicles, which leads to serious accidents and significant costs for the rail transport industry. Wheel surface defects (especially wheel flats) can be effectively detected on board railway vehicles using acoustical diagnostic technique and onboard acoustics diagnostic system In the system, microphones are fixed under the body of railway vehicle to record and analyze the frequency content of the acoustic signal for wheels (and potentially for bearings) and alarm if specific defect frequency is detected during operation. This system can be simple integrated into the traditional onboard monitoring (diagnostic) system of railway train because it is wireless (uses microphones and doesn’t require place wires from axle-box accelerometer sensors to body of vehicle). Prototype of the Onboard Acoustics Diagnostic System is presented on movie. Some results are published on the article (enclosure 1). Results confirm efficiency of the method and operability of the system. We believe that it is very perspective direction for further research especially for railway high-speed trains.
