My friend Elmyra gave me an incredible birthday gift – a single shot (without a bullet) from an antique rifle that may once have belonged to Countess Emilija Pliaterytė, participant of the 1831 Uprising, captain of the insurgent military forces, and known as the Lithuanian Joan of Arc. After her parents divorced, Emilija lived with her mother. She was an educated and well-read young woman. Early on she learned to handle weapons, to shoot and to fence, and in shooting practice she often outperformed well-known marksmen. She was also an excellent horsewoman and loved to set out on long rides. Emilija grew up in an environment where landowners cared for their peasants and did not prevent their own children from socializing with peasant children. She would often visit villagers, teaching peasant children Polish and French, and perhaps she also spoke Lithuanian. When the commandant of Daugavpils fortress, General Mikhail Kablukov, asked for Emilija’s hand in marriage, she replied that it was impossible, because the general was a citizen of russia – a state hostile to Lithuania. In 1830, after losing her mother and being rejected by her father, she began studying military tactics. When Julius Grużewski, owner of the Kelmė manor, ordered the capture of Kelmė and declared the beginning of the uprising, Emilija Pliaterytė, then living at the Antazavė manor, decided it was time for her to act as well. She cut her hair, dressed in men’s clothing, armed herself with a pistol and a dagger, and went to her cousin Cezary at the Dusetos manor. On March 29, 1831, together with her adjutant Marija Prusinskaitė and Cezary Plater, she proclaimed the start of the uprising in the Dusetos church, raised the flag, and gathered a unit consisting of 280 riflemen, 60 horsemen, and several hundred peasants armed with scythes. The next morning, her unit attacked the horse post station in Daugailiai, seizing 30 horses and the treasury.
