Sometime around midnight, while we and the rest of the pack were fast asleep, our worst nightmare became a reality. Rocky passed away unexpectedly in his enclosure. We still are not sure exactly what happened - we can only speculate that his sudden death was due to either bloat or a severe allergic reaction—possibly from a bee or insect sting. After reviewing our security footage, we saw no signs of pain, discomfort, or distress in the moments before he passed. Rocky was calm and peaceful, lying down for the last time in his favorite spot. He was discovered this morning in his and Rama’s enclosure, resting on his platform. But this time, something was different. When our team approached, they were met with a heartbreaking stillness. By the time we realized what had happened, he was already gone. Our only solace is that he appeared to pass quietly, beneath the stars, in the place he loved most—surrounded by his pack. Rocky was our first official foster fail. We rescued him from a shelter where he had been scheduled for euthanasia after being used for breeding and discarded when he was no longer seen as useful. But Rocky didn’t let that define him. When we arrived at the shelter on his euthanasia day, he immediately lept into our arms and embraced us with one of his trademark Rocky kisses. From that day forward, he never looked back. He embraced his second chance with joy, grace, and an unshakable spirit. He became one of our brightest ambassadors—and one of our best friends. Even in our heartbreak, we remind ourselves that we were able to give Rocky a second chance—and he made the most of every moment. In the days ahead, we will grieve, we will mourn, and we will cry. But above all, we will celebrate the life of the happiest wolfdog we’ve ever known. Rest easy, Rocky. We will miss you.
