This is a message so many of us need to hear right now... A few weeks ago we had our friends Seth and Dave on our podcast to talk to Andy and I about reading poetry, which is something neither of us did very much of. The conversation got me poking around online to see what might be a good fit for me as a reader, and I landed on Refusing Heaven by Jack Gilbert. Poetry has never really been my thing so I didn't have too many expectations, but the opening poem, A Brief of the Defense hit me like a ton of bricks. "To make injustice the only measure of our attention is to praise the Devil." I don't think this line has ever been more relevant than it is right now. Every morning when we wake up, it's to some new horrific headline, to some great tragedy, or an erosion of freedom, or a trampling of liberty. It's so easy to get swept up in it all, and it's so easy to let it consume you. But let's remember that we should not feel guilty for still finding joy in life, even though we know others are suffering, and that ourselves may soon suffer.
