The Most Important Reference Mix? The Rough Mix. I was recently asked this during a guest lecture at RMIT University: How do I use reference mixes when I’m mixing? The truth is… I rarely do. Unless the track I’m mixing is almost identical to the reference, external references don’t give me much beyond general genre-level balance or tonal response (which I can check with a spectrum analyzer anyway). But the one reference I do use—and I use it far more now than I did early in my career—is the rough mix. Why? Because it’s the mix the artist has lived with the longest. It highlights the instruments and sounds they’ve already decided are most important. I might disagree with their balance and make my case—but if I’ve pushed one instrument up and buried another, and it makes no difference to the song, I’ll undo my own work and follow the rough. So for me, the goal is to match the rough—and then make it better. Name your favorite reference track, go! Using references when mixing music is important because it allows you to compare vour mix to a professionally mixed track and ensure that it sounds balanced and cohesive. It can also help you identify any issues with the frequency balance or dynamics in vour mix that need to be corrected. Besides checking things tonally, referencing can give you inspiration and ideas for new techniques to try on the records you mix. • • #mixingmusic #mixingandmastering #audioengineer #homestudio #mixingtips
