The day was supposed to be a celebration. As one of Florida’s rarest marine animals dies at alarming rates, a team of shark researchers had a surge of hope when, on June 18, they caught a healthy adult smalltooth sawfish offshore of Tampa Bay. Not only was this the first-ever adult tagged by a researcher in the bay area, the animal’s healthy blood would be compared to the blood of sick and dead sawfish in the Florida Keys. Maybe, researchers said, this animal could help apprehend a mystery killer that has left at least 53 endangered sawfish dead and countless others spinning erratically this year. Then Lukas Heath, one of the main responders to the dozens of reports of dead sawfish washing up across South Florida, got a phone call. A kayak guide saw a male sawfish thrashing the morning of June 21 on a mangrove flat in Boca Ciega Bay. It seemed “huge,” they said, and it was clear it was sick. Despite researchers’ attempt to find and rescue the struggling sawfish, the fate of the animal became clear days later. Read the full report at the link in our bio.

A Bradenton man caused dozens of protected shorebirds to flee their nests when he landed his company’s helicopter earlier this month on the southern tip of Egmont Key State Park, a protected area where tens of thousands of birds have gathered for breeding season, according to Florida wildlife officials. Video of the incident, obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, shows the helicopter’s whirring rotors stirring up sand and flocks of shorebirds retreating from their beach nests on the restricted wildlife refuge May 12. Shortly after landing, a woman exited the helicopter and started taking photos, according to a Florida wildlife incident report. Tap the link in our bio to read more. #florida #bradenton #egmontkey
