The Rude Boy (& The Rude Girl) Style was Jamaica’s first youth culture movement, this was due to dis-satisfaction,rising unemployment and poverty following Jamaica’s independece in 1962. Contrast to the UK’s mods and teds adopting upper class clothing, rude boys essential garments included patent brogues, pork pie hats and double breasted blazers. The inspiration for their behaviour and style were inspired by African- American jazz musicians and hollywoods portrayals of gangsters and outlaws. Due to mass emigration from the Caribbean to the UK in the 60’s, Rude Boy and Rude Girl style quickly accelerated.
