It usually means there’s some swelling or blockage in the upper airways (the trachea or the vocal cords). 👶 Common causes in little ones: • Croup (a viral illness causing swelling around the vocal cords) • Foreign body (something stuck in the airway) • Anaphylactic allergic reactions (causing sudden airway swelling) • Laryngomalacia (a floppy voice box - commonly in small babies <6 months of age, usually milder and more chronic) 🩺 WHAT TO DO ABOUT STRIDOR? If your child has any of the following: • Struggling to breathe or showing signs of respiratory distress • Drooling or unable to swallow • Turning blue or pale • Has developed stridor suddenly/out of the blue 👉 Seek medical help urgently. Stridor can sometimes be a sign of a serious airway problem. For CROUP: • Cold air may be helpful but ensure they are wrapped up warm if you go outside. • If your child is able to comfortably swallow then a dose of ibuprofen may be helpful. • Stay calm and keep your child calm, the more distressed they become the more challenging it can be for them to breathe.
