A time of reflection.. As I sit here thinking, today has been a whirlwind of emotions after what transpired from what many of us have been waiting for when Steffen, a young man from Norway went missing. It wasn’t what many had expected. This young man had a desire to do something that nobody had ever thought of doing but he chased after it knowing it’d take him to the roughest and harshest of climates but along the way he made a huge impact on so many. When I reflect on this young man and how he made so many friends along the way, is so inspiring to say the least. Just 29 years old, with the support of his parents left home and set out and embarked on a journey that would take him to the doorsteps of the hearts of many without knowing that he would leave a lasting impact. As I’ve learned about this young man and hearing his story and how he went missing, the overwhelming sense of wanting him safe and sound was always on my mind and when the news that his dogs were discovered without him made me think, dogs do not leave their owners unless if there’s something wrong. From that day I had this sick sense in my gut saying something happened to him on his journey. Day after day I looked for updates and today it felt so sad, as the news of him being found deceased was heartbreaking. My first thoughts was his Parents and how the news of their son must’ve crushed their world into a million pieces. As the day went on the overwhelming sense of support for his family flooded my newsfeed and at times found myself so inspired but at the same time saddened that this young man whom wanted to explore our lands came to a tragic end. It felt like everyone knew him.. This young man whom wanted to travel from Norway and left the comforts of home alone has become someone who has inspired many First Nations to come together as one and at best has made many open their eyes to helping one another in the toughest of times. What it showed me was that one person, Steffen came across from Norway to show us that life is precious and that we are all human, regardless of the divides that set us apart.
