Every year, there’s always an influx in people declaring they’ll learn a signed language and, whilst some may stick with it, it’s not always the case! Contrary to popular belief, we do love it when people make an effort and try to communicate with us with basic understanding of sign language. Do not be put off if you make mistakes, we’ll gladly help! Some stress at the time it takes to pick up sign language but isn’t that the case with any language anyways? Video Description: Kirsty, a white Deaf woman with a red buzzcut wears a khaki green t shirt with white block writing across the chest that reads Oregon 1982 with a white star below the writing. She sits to the left of Sarah. Sarah, a Black Deaf Woman with a black curly ponytail that’s held up by a red ribbon scrunchie, is wearing a white t-shirt underneath a green crew neck sweatshirt that has jehucal embroidered on the left of the sweatshirt. Go to the spaces that celebrate your interests. Within the community, there’s groups for almost anything. If there isn’t a group that shares your interest, make one! Being able to relate on something else as well as Deafness makes it easier to feel comfortable. There’s always a lot of discourse around education and Deaf children but very rarely do we ever have larger discussions about higher education. In this upcoming episode, we unpack a submission about self-advocacy at university and share our experiences as well as tips. Full video next week! #sociallysound

‼️ Episode Out Now ‼️ Access to Work is such an important resource for deaf and disabled people to use in order to be able to do our jobs without worrying about access. Unfortunately, many deaf and disabled people are facing challenges with Access to Work. This is affecting so many of us, day in and day out. There’s a few things you can do if you want to share your views and opinions on Access to Work. ➡️ Write to your MP or attend their surgery. Find out who your local MP is if you don’t already know, tell them about the problems with Access to Work and what needs to change. ➡️Respond to the Government’s Pathways to Work consultation. You can do this directly on the Government website, or if you’d rather do a collective response. You can fill out @accesstoworkcollective multi choice survey (note: this is not accessible in BSL).
