(Headphones to experience) What if every key on the piano was heard from a different point around you? This is another Atmos experiment and something a little different from my usual. Each individual key of the piano is mapped to a different place around the listener—with low notes below eye level and high notes placed literally higher up. The song is Debussy’s Clair De Lune, chosen because it uses 56 individual keys throughout the song (and it rocks). It’s another ‘binaural’ version of a surround mix so it will work best in headphones. (**Also note labels are not key relative) I’d love to do something similar with a real pianist soon, so keep an eye out for that. Back to more sound design next week! Sound design challenge: – Using only a recording of dry ice, I tried re-designing the Blackhole magic from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Recently I got some advice to design more sounds from my personal library, so I’m going to try out a few of these challenges. Only rules for this one were, I had to start with that original recording. I worked mostly in phase plant using the sample and granular engines, as well as a bit in serum 2’s spectral engine. The only additive synthesis used was a bit of Logarithmic FM from a wave table to add some extra crackle. I tried blending a couple classic anime sound effects with some modern high sample rate designed SFX. I hope it still feels a bit like 90s anime, while giving a fresh take. This was by far the hardest one yet to mix–trying to get the reverberating metal sounds to track with parts of the suit was a fun challenge.
