Quit Destroying Your Vocals! I see younger engineers completely take out all of the Lows & Mid Range trying to chase that “Trap Pop Sound”. That’s not the way! You can make aggressive EQ moves, but you still want it to sound natural & not like a brittle overly-processed sound. Ppl naturally have Lows & Mid Range! You can still hear the Low End when you listen to artists like Chris Brown or Dua Lipa, so quit taking ALL the body out of your sound out. 1. Use a bigger Low Shelf or broad Q attenuations instead of High Passing out all your lows. 2. Use Multi-Band Compression & Dynamic EQs that take out the Low End & Mud when needed, instead of giant cuts all the time (if needed). 3. Utilize Parallel Tracks! If you’re struggling get all the energy from your one Lead Bus, it’s ok to add some Parallels that extenuate that energy you’re missing (tuck em down). Could be 1176, 670, Air, or Chorus/Fx parallels. How to make your drums hit harder! First is with tonal shaping. This is adding things like compression (typically med fast atk, fast real), EQ (Boost knock in kick/snares), and saturation (adds energy/round off transients). Second is using a (Soft) Clipper! I recommend @therealmikedean GainStation, and @sir_audio_tools StandardClip. Bring the saturation knob up some on standard clip to bring the knock back in. Third is using parallel processing! This is using heavier compression (4, 6, 8, 10 ratio), EQing to emphasize the “knocky” regions of kick snare, and adding saturation (sounding a lil smashed/trashy is ok sometimes).
