Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, in the summer of 1934 at his Swiss villa, Villa Senar. Structured as 24 variations on Paganini’s 24th Caprice, the work functions as a single-movement concerto for piano and orchestra. The 18th variation inverts Paganini’s theme and transforms it into a soaring romantic melody - this is what you are hearing in this clip. Rachmaninoff himself gave the premiere on 7 November 1934 in Baltimore with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Arthur Rubinstein (1887–1982) was a Polish-American pianist regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. Born in Łódź, Poland, he was recognised as a child prodigy from an early age, making his public debut at the age of seven. At ten years old, he moved to Berlin, where he studied under Karl Heinrich Barth, a pupil of Liszt and Czerny, establishing a direct pedagogical lineage to Beethoven. He made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1900, launching a career that spanned eight decades. Rubinstein became renowned for his interpretations of Chopin, and is considered as one of the most important interpreters of his music. However, his vast repertoire also included works by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Liszt, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Brahms, and Spanish and South American composers such as Albéniz, Granados, Villa-Lobos, and de Falla. In 1964, during the Cold War, he gave a historic concert in Moscow, performing an all-Chopin recital that was a landmark moment in 20th-century classical music.
