Rabies Affects the Brain — And Behavior A woman scratched by her own pet cat — just a minor wound. She felt fine… for months. No fever. No symptoms. No vaccine. But beneath the surface, the rabies virus was already moving. 🧬 It climbs silently through the nerves toward the brain. And once it gets there? ⚠️ It’s almost always too late. Rabies doesn't warn you. It doesn't give second chances. By the time symptoms show, the outcome is nearly always fatal. ⏱ Rabies is 99.9% fatal — but 100% preventable if treated early. Never ignore even the smallest scratch or bite. How Rabies Makes You Afraid Of Water -- Why It's Such A Dangerous Infection... Rabies, also formally known as hydrophobia, is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected animal, such as a dog or bat. The virus infects the brain and spinal cord, leading to severe symptoms like fever, confusion, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, and fear of water (which is why it's sometimes referred to as hydrophobia). When a person is in the advanced stages of rabies, they may exhibit an inability to swallow water and an irrational fear of it due to the illness-induced muscle spasms and throat pain. If left untreated, rabies can be fatal. The key to preventing the progression of rabies is prompt administration of post-exposure prophylaxis, which includes a series of vaccinations and immunoglobulin injections. There are generally five stages of rabies, which are outlined below: 1. Incubation Period: This stage can last from several days to several years, depending on the location of the bite and the amount of virus transmitted. During this stage, the virus is multiplying in the body and no visible symptoms are present. 2. Prodrome: This stage starts with mild symptoms, such as fever, headache, and fatigue. Some people may also experience tingling or prickling sensations at the site of the bite. 3. Acute Neurological Phase: This is the most dangerous stage of rabies. It can last from two to ten days and is characterized by symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, agitation, fear of water, and hallucinations. 4. Coma: At this stage, the individual may experience seizures, paralysis, and become completely unresponsive to stimuli. 5. Death: If no medical intervention is done, death ultimately occurs. However, in rare cases, some people survive, but they may experience permanent neurological damage. #fyp #real #psa #medical #medicine
