Ozempic and Wegovy can slow down - or even reverse - biological ageing 💉 In a trial of 84 people taking semaglutide, their biological age dropped by 3.1 years on average, with some organs becoming almost 5 years younger. This finding could make these some of the most impactful anti-ageing drugs on the market. How strong is your immune system? Does immunity changes with age and what food 🥗 and drink 🥛can help boost immunity? When you are under the covers, sniffling from your third cold of the year, you might wonder whether your immune system is pulling its weight. It is a question we would all love to answer: is our immune system healthy or not? To help, we have answered eight of the biggest questions in immunology in our special issue. A number so large it brings us to the edge of mathematics 🤯🔢 We’re reaching the limit of what’s knowable with mathematics, with the uncovering of a number so large it’s hard to even describe. Busy Beaver numbers are used to describe the longest possible run-times of ‘Turing machines’ - a theoretical model of computation conceived by Alan Turing. These numbers are surprisingly hard to figure out. But after uncovering the fifth Busy Beaver number in 2021, an online community of mathematicians now thinks they’ve figured out the sixth number - and it’s beyond massive. What does this mean for the nature of mathematics? Hear the full story on The world, the universe and us, a news podcast for the insatiably curious, hosted by Rowan Hooper and Penny Sarchet. Robotic imaging reveals complex secrets of plant-fungal networks 🍄🌱 Plant-fungal trade networks draw down around 13 billion tons of CO2 per year into the soil -- equivalent to ~1/3 of global energy-related emissions. Despite their global importance, scientists did not understand how these brainless organisms construct expansive and efficient supply chains across their underground networks. Now, new research has used advanced robotics to track the hyper-efficient supply chains formed between plants and mycorrhizal fungi as they trade carbon and nutrients, discovering new fungal behaviour. Scientists discovered that the fungi construct a lace-like mycelial network that moves carbon outward from plant roots in a wave-like formation. Moving resources bi-directionally, controlling their flow and speed as needed and deploying special growing branches as microscopic ‘pathfinders’ to explore new territory. Our 40 trillion cells have a unique bioelectric signature that could prevent cancer or regenerate limbs ⚡️👂️ Science and Technology Writer, Sally Adee explores the crucial role electricity plays in your body, which scientists are only just beginning to understand. From determining your shape as you developed in the womb, to healing and regenerating wounds, to the role of bioelectricity in cancer – the body’s electrome is at the heart of how we were born, how we live and how we might die. The Harvard scientist raising concerns about incoming comet 3I/ATLAS — namely, that it could be some kind of alien probe sent to study our solar system — is now saying the interstellar object may be nuclear-powered. Avi Loeb said he bases this hypothesis on a July 21 image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and shared by NASA. He said the image shows a glow on the front end of 3I/ATLAS, as if it is emitting light. #comet #astrology #astroid #alien #ufo
Mitochondria are linked to sleep in ways we never realised 😴 In a study on fruit flies, researchers discovered a surprising link between mitochondrial damage and sleep pressure. They even showed ways of engineering and altering fruit fly mitochondria that could impact their sleep duration. Given how mitochondria are essential in all complex life forms - like us - could this work one day lead to sleep treatments?
