A nice hexatonic sound Row 6 on the color tree has some beautiful sounds, and because these modes all have 6 notes, we can find lots of even patterns of runs and chords within them. The Color Tree is a music theory discovery I made a few years ago that generates 67 sounds out of the circle of fifths and then organizes those sounds from simple to complex and from dark to bright. Dorian is NOT a dark sound According to “The Color Tree”, a musical object that I discovered a few years ago, the Dorian sound is not dark or bright, but in fact, neutral. It is composed of winter and summer, the brightest and darkest tetrachords from row four. So even though it has a minor third, it should be considered a neutral sound. I hope you find this as fascinating and as useful as I do. Name this sound! This sound, the darkest on Row 4 of The Color Tree, is spelled 1 b3 4 b7. I’m calling Row 4 The Four Seasons and this sound, being the darkest mode of the group, is Winter. Thought we might be tempted to call it a minor 11 or something similar, but in minor seventh chords we usually play the fifth. This sound, having only four notes, and no fifth, should not be called minor seventh chord. Do you have a name forthis sound? Leave it in the comments! Lydian to Locrian In Row 7 of this music theory object, The Color Tree, the major modes emerge from darkest to brightest, Locrian to Lydian, with Dorian in the middle as a neutral sound. Brightest sounds in Row 6 and 7 The brightest sounds on The Color Tree are constructed by stacking fifths above the root note. In this clip, I’m using C as the fundamental pitch. If we stack six notes in fifths, we get the brightest hexatonic sound, and if we stack seven notes, we get Lydian. Recognize this? This first chord sound from this trending audio is built off of an F#m9 chord, which is very similar to a sound on the Color Tree in row six: [-3 +2] Which is spelled: 1 2 b3 4 5 b7 In this case, though we’re not playing the 4, and we’re using a particular voicing, not too unlike the Kenny Barron voicing. Two Sounds Above Neutral Pentatonic These two emerge in row six of The Color Tree, and when they are combined, they spell out the Dorian mode of the major scale, the neutral sound in row seven. Because they have an even number of notes, one of these hexatonic sounds can be a better choice than one of the major modes. How to use The Color Tree to find sounds The color tree is a newly discovered music theory object that generates 67 sounds and organizes them from simple to complex and from dark to bright. Start from any root note, and choose a sound based on the quality. Simple and bright sounds exist near the bottom, right, and complex dark sounds live closer to the top left. 67 sounds with a common property What property does the major scale share with the major pentatonic scale, minor pentatonic scale, bebop scale, power chords, the sus2 triad and the other sounds on The Color Tree? All of the notes in the sound are situated adjacent to each other along the circle of fifths.
