Kulintangan is an idiophone comprising a set of six to nine small brass kettle gongs arranged horizontally on a wooden stand. Historically, the kulintangan was introduced by the Brunei-Malay community in the olden days, but it has since become an integral part of other cultures, including the Bajau, Murut and Kadazandusun groups. While the gong serves as the main beat, the kulintangan usually forms the melody. The player sits in front of the row of gongs and strikes the kulintangan with two small wooden mallets. The kulintangan is often played during festive occasions or to accompany traditional dances.
