The film, THE ROCKET (2005) - which is in my TOP 20 BEST HOCKEY MOVIES countdown vid. I posted a few weeks ago (at # 3, to be exact), - is a harrowing, gritty drama that depicts one of the games greatest players, and is transitional in its storytelling, switching back & forth between English & French. Hockey's greatest player at that time was Maurice Richard, who in 1945 became the first to score 50 goals in a season (in 50 games, no less). He was a talent so large that Conn Smythe, owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, once called out his wife during a Leafs-Habs game, per this scene; it is also reported he later went to personally to Montreal’s Owner & offered a million dollars to the Canadiens for him (about $10 million today). The Rocket, was so much a part of Quebec society that he transcended even organized religion. Red Storey, a former referee and long-time hockey commentator, once said of him that, in Quebec, "hockey was bigger than the Church, and Rocket Richard was bigger than the Pope." One of the few French players in an English league, Richard has a chip on his shoulder and suffers subtle racial discrimination at the hands of the owner and other players. This discrimination would eventually boil over one night in Boston, leading to the city of Montreal erupting in violent riots following a suspension (unfair to most) of the city’s most beloved figure in Richard. As a side note, this scene in the movie is more of a milder version, as witnesses have actually described the incident as being more harsh in nature & Smythe being more derogatory…and it’s no wonder: he was known to be so brash, that in in one famous 1938 incident, Conn Smythe, watched a talented Black Canadian, Herb Carnegie, play as a member of the Toronto Young Rangers. He is alleged to have said either that he would accept Carnegie on the team if he were white or that he would pay $10,000 to anyone who could turn Carnegie white.
