🪖Lone Survivor (2013) - Based on the true story of a Navy SEAL mission in Afghanistan that goes badly wrong, leaving Marcus Luttrell and his fellow SEALSs fighting for survival (trying to avoid spoilers, but the title does give some of that away!). From reading and understanding Operation Redwing and its aim to locate Taliban leader Ahmad Shah in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan you can learn a lot more about what happened and it does become apparent that aspects of the story have been adapted. With that said, this is a very impactful and engaging film and one that lives long in the memory. Mark Wahlberg is excellent as Luttrell and at times I found the film gave off a similar feel to the also excellent 'American Sniper' which has Bradley Cooper playing another famous Texan US military member in Chris Kyle. Wahlberg was able to spend time with Luttrell, gradually earning his trust, allowing Wahlberg to get to know both him and the story of what happened better, this comes through in his performance. Alongside the intense action, there is a strong plot for character building, allowing you to care about the men. This is all backed up by one of my favourite war movie scores by the post-rock pioneers 'Explosions in the Sky' which I highly recommend, 'Waking Up' is a personal favourite.
