Given my “workable” condition and the danger in operating so close to the sciatic nerve I had to search for a surgeon willing to take the chance. I could walk, but I couldn’t run. And to be honest…I hate running - but Ali loves it. I just kept thinking if I have a daughter one day just like her Mum and I couldn’t join her in that passion the way Ali’s Father joins her it would kill me. Eventually, in the summer, I found a highly qualified surgeon in Toronto willing to do the 5 hour procedure. He warned me that because the muscle had retracted and atrophied so heavily they would have to implant a donor’s Achilles tendon to act as a bridge between my muscle and bone. He also warned me that should they accidentally damage the sciatic nerve while cutting away scar tissue then I’d likely never be able to work my leg properly again. On Nov. 16th, 2022, after my surgeon tried to talk me out of it a few times, I went under the knife and woke up to find him standing over me. My leg was all bandaged up and my head was pounding.
