Let’s first learn the 7 Diatonical chords of the Em key. Are Bass Fills underrated??? 🤔 Tabs on Patreon 🎉 Today’s bass fill is heavily inspired by Jaco’s 2nd phrase over Teen Town. I slightly changed the rhythm and also added notes at the end to make it sound more like a funk fill. The secret here is to understand what is happening with the chord and scale. The “implied” chord is a F7. Now….it is very important to understand that this fill doesn’t work over every single F7 in every single song. Chords when applied in different situations should be treated differently. So please, keep that in mind. In this particular case, I am thinking of the F7 more as the I7 chord. Like a blues or a funky loop. It could also work as a F7 chord resolving to a Bb chord (V7 going to I). The main thing is to understand that we will be using the F Mixolydian scale here: F G A Bb C D Eb = R M2 M3 P4 P5 M6 m7 In addition to the Mixolydian scale, we will also be adding some Chromatic Approach notes connecting us toward the M3 of the scale! I recommend first learning the phrase and trying it out in loops or even a blues. And then look for other songs that you might be able to fit this fill. By doing so, you will play this phrase so many times that it eventually becomes second nature and it ma fully yours to use! Practice it slowly and have fun! Is FUNK the best genre??🎶 What makes this line so groovy?? Well…it’s many things. First - we have a very clear beat 1, which is followed by many syncopated notes (notes mostly on off/up beats). The use of 16th notes adds the feeling of moving our body (or nod our head) to the beat. Second - It has great use of ghost notes. In this case, 2 different kinds. We have the regular ghost note marked as a single X. This one is often played on the upbeat and adds more movement to the line. However, we also have the “tap”, marked as 4Xs, where we hit the strings with our right hand to create the effect of a Snare Drum. This, makes this line sound like it has a drummer playing together, adding to the funk! Lastly - it’s the note choices! The use of D minor pentatonic and also D Blues Scale is very characteristic of funk. And also note the use of the F going to F#. This is also another very used and great way to create lines within this pentatonic environment.
