Ever heard of Manila Sound? It’s the funky, feel-good music that defined the Philippines in the 1970s. Think disco beats, catchy Taglish lyrics, and playful storytelling — a genre that captured the soul of Pinoy life during that time. Often called the ‘birth of modern OPM,’ it paved the way for today’s Filipino pop. In this episode, Tita Salita brings the rhythm, the history, and the artists that made us dance, laugh, and feel proud to be Pinoy. Even if you didn’t grow up in the Philippines, this is your front-row seat to a nostalgic sound that still lives on. ✨🇵🇭🇨🇦🎶🎸🎤 #TitaSalita #ManilaSound #OPMHistory #PinoyMusicCulture #FilipinoThrowback

Manila Sound is a Philippine music genre that became popular in the 70s, peaking during the Martial law era. It is regarded as the precursor to the OPM genre. Often catchy and containing a memorable melody, Manila Sound broadly spans pop, soft rock, disco, soul, even jazz and funk. It is more apt to refer to Manila Sound as a period in Philippine music rather than a single musical style. Most songs were composed in Tagalog or Taglish, sometimes featuring Pinoy slang or gay lingo. They are also often written with comedic or sexual undertones. Plenty of bands became popular during the Manila Sound era but pop rock band Hotdog was one of the standouts. They released hit singles after hit singles, but the best song that perfectly encapsulates Manila Sound in my opinion is, well, Manila. To be clear, the Manila Sound term was not derived from this Hotdog song. The song was released much later in the decade when the term for the genre was already well established and popular. The song was written about love for the Philippine capital city, from the point of view of a Pinoy abroad longing for home and intending to stay for good when he returns. “Manila, Manila Miss you like hell, Manila No place in the world like Manila I’m coming home to stay” #phmusic #phculture #manila #manilasound
