Open + closed syllables make up almost 75% of English words! 🚪 Closed syllables - (consonant-vowel-consonant) the vowel says it’s sound (cat, got) 🪟 Open syllables- (consonant-vowel), the vowel says it’s name (go, me, hi) Here is a great activity to do with your kids! ⭐️ Using cue cards, write down some 3 letter words. 🌟 Read the words with their regular, short sounds 💫 Now fold over the end sound, and make it into an open syllable where the vowel says its name. 👋🏼 You can use real and nonsense words here if you like. The point is for kids to grasp the concept that when there’s no consonant at the end, the vowel will say its name. 🤪 There are a few exceptions to this- don’t use the word “to” since it doesn’t follow the usually phonetic structure. This is called “word mapping” or “orthographic mapping” of words - a process of how our brains break down the information/words and put it back together.
