Bedřich Smetana composed The Moldau (Vltava) in 1874 as the second movement of his six-part symphonic poem cycle Má vlast (My Country). The piece traces the path of the Vltava River from its mountain springs through the Czech countryside to Prague. Written as a “musical picture” of Czech national identity, it includes depictions of hunting horns, village weddings, moonlit nymphs, rapids, and the final arrival at Vyšehrad castle. Má vlast was completed over several years, and premiered in full on 5 November 1882 in Prague. Sir Georg Solti was a Hungarian-British conductor, born in Budapest in 1912. After early work at the Hungarian State Opera and assisting Toscanini at Salzburg in 1937, he fled Nazi persecution and settled in Switzerland during World War II. After the war, he became music director of the Bavarian State Opera and later the Frankfurt Opera. He served as musical director of Covent Garden (1961–71) and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1969–91), making over 250 recordings. His 1958–65 Ring cycle with Decca remains one of the most acclaimed classical recordings of all time. We hope you enjoy this clip and strongly encourage you to listen to the full performance online.
