About Inthemix_joecarrell Sound Effects

I prefer to mix using a multi-buss method. Rather than only one heavily treated final stereo master, I have a few sub groups that are lightly treated before reaching the final master. This allows me to more appropriately treat each one of those groups AND create additional separation just by choice of different flavors of analog circuits. This is a piece of advice that has served me well and I believe propelled my own mix career. Let’s call it the rule of contrasts. When working as an assistant for my mixing mentor, occasionally songs would arrive full of all stereo tracks. He would jokingly call it “big mono” Hahaha. And he was 100% right. By muting one side of a few stereo signals and panning it to only one side or somewhere between LCR, all of a sudden the sound stage sounded bigger and wider. Letting the most important tracks of the song set a little on top of all the others instead of battling to make everything as loud as possible gave us a deeper soundstage. That’s just a quick few examples of the philosophy. But it applies to reverb, delays, eq as well. Give it a try! ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼 - - - #mixtip #mixingengineer #audio #producelieapro #recordingengineer #mixing @Produce Like A Pro

Have you seen our recent video “recording country”?  We walk though tracking drums, upright bass, acoustic guitar, piano, pedal steel, and lead vocals using the Maag Audio PREQ2 for pre AND eq.  AND the multi-tracks are downloadable!!!   - @Produce Like A Pro - - #ProduceLikeAPro #MixTip #MixingEngineer #audio #RecordingStudio #studio #music #ProducersOfInstagram
We are getting ready for a session today and thought we would give you a look at the close mic options we have on the drum kit. We do change things up a bit depending on genre and vibe, but this is a common starting spot for a lot of what we do. #RecordingEngineer #drums #JoeCarrell #RecordingStudio #audio #MixTip
Very frequently, vocals recorded with a microphone just inches away from a singer have an excessive amount of “snot” or harshness in the 1-3k range. Which can make the vocalist sound very un-elegant or even make it difficult to get them set into the track properly. My favorite two tools to deal with this problem: Waves Audio C1 comp SC Oeksound Soothe 2 Both are very effective at accomplishing this task, but do sound differently doing it. Happy mixing!
Here’s a simple trick for getting a bass guitar to cut through a mix. Just a touch of grit to better hear the attack of the note…or heavy distortion to get attitude. Happy mixing!! - - - #m#mixtip#b#bassguitar#m#mixingengineer#r#recordingengineer#m#mixing#audio
A common question I get about recording is whether I prefer to use primarily one style of preamp for capture versus mixing and matching various pieces. While either can work if the pres are high end, I much prefer to mix and match flavors so that even the raw unprocessed tracks start taking the shape of the finished mix. Things that need to be big and upfront are indeed BIG. All the supportive layers are tight and lean naturally finding their way just behind the key items. Things that need to have very detailed open high end have it just as things that need to have the high end “rounded” or softened are that way right away. The good news is that philosophy also TOTALLY supports our need to own lots of gear 😂😂😂 Happy mixing! #MixTip #JoeCarrell #RecordingStudio #audio #AudioEngineer #studio #Producer
Automation is one of the most important portions of mixing to me. Of the many thousands of songs I have mixed in my career, I never can across a single one that wasn’t better with automation than it was sitting there at static levels before automation. I know it’s time consuming, but that attention to detail has built me a career. Learn all about my mixing process by checking out my new 12 week “Mix Mentorship” academy. I have a link in the link tree above and also on my website. #MixTip #Automation #JoeCarrell #Mixing #MixingEngineer #Audio #RecordingEngineer #RecordingStudio
This has been a popular topic on my pages lately! But it is a good question as well. My advice to our friends that are beginning to get good sounding mixes at static levels is to look for ways to automate excitement and energy into the mixes. Linear mixes where everything is the same volume at all times mixes are always going to limit the impact to the listener. Just the opposite of what the artist is actually hoping for in a reaction. In addition to some automation moves, dialing back how heavy-handed we use resonance control plug-ins and even things like track spacer may be a wise choice. All of these plug-ins are very very cool, but also very easy to abuse. Happy mixing!! #MixTip #JoeCarrell #audio #Mixing #MixingEngineer #Producer #ProducersOfTikTok
