George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 in A major and No. 2 in D major (Op. 11) are his most celebrated orchestral works. Composed in 1901 during his early twenties, the rhapsodies are vivid symphonic portraits of Romanian life, based on urban and folk melodies. Rhapsody No. 1 is especially known for its infectious rhythms, spontaneous energy, and colourful orchestration, unfolding as a series of contrasting dance themes in a loosely episodic structure. The work’s popularity was immediate following its 1903 premiere in Bucharest, and it has remained a staple of the repertoire ever since. This performance of Rhapsody No. 1 was recorded live in 1978 at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, with the George Enescu Philharmonic under the baton of Sergiu Celibidache. Celibidache (1912–1996), born in Romania, was among the most distinctive conductors of the 20th century. A philosopher-musician, he studied in Berlin and Paris, and held major posts with the Berlin Philharmonic and Munich Philharmonic. He was deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism and rejected studio recordings, believing that musical truth could only be experienced live. His interpretations - spacious, meticulous, and intensely focused - offered listeners what he called a “transcendental experience” of sound. We hope you enjoy this rare historic performance, now preserved as one of the few recordings authorised by his estate. Sergiu Celibidache | G.
