“I am in the world only for the purpose of composing.” – Franz Schubert Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 100 (D. 929), was one of his last completed works, composed in 1827 and published just before his death in 1828. First performed at a private gathering in January 1828, the piece was among the few works Schubert heard performed before his passing. The second movement, Andante con moto, is particularly well-known, inspired by the Swedish folk song Se solen sjunker and famously featured in films such as Barry Lyndon and The Hunger. The Beaux Arts Trio was one of the most celebrated piano trios of the 20th century. Founded in 1955 by Menahem Pressler (piano), Daniel Guilet (violin), and Bernard Greenhouse (cello), the trio performed for over 50 years, recording the complete standard piano trio repertoire. The group gave their final U.S. concert at Tanglewood in August 2008, and their last performance took place in Lucerne, Switzerland, on September 6, 2008. Menahem Pressler (1923–2023) was the trio’s founding pianist and only continuous member. Born in Germany, he fled the Nazis in 1939, later winning the Debussy International Piano Competition (1946), which launched his career. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1947 with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra and went on to teach for nearly seven decades at Indiana University. He continued performing into his 90s, making his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic at age 90.
