🦋 Butterflies “Puddling” in the Smokies 🦋 If you’re exploring the banks of the Little River in Great Smoky Mountains National Park this summer, you might notice a magical sight — dozens (sometimes hundreds!) of butterflies gathered together on the damp sand or mud. This behavior is called “puddling” — and it’s not just a social hangout. Male butterflies gather in these spots to sip water rich in minerals and salts. These nutrients are later passed to females during mating, giving the next generation of caterpillars a better start in life. 🐛➡️🦋 Keep an eye out for Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails, and other beautiful species fluttering along the riverbanks. It’s one of nature’s quiet, peaceful spectacles — and another reason to slow down and take in the little wonders of the Smokies. 🌿 📍 Tip: You’ll often spot puddling butterflies in sunny, open spots along the water, especially in late morning or early afternoon. #GreatSmokyMountains #Butterflies #Puddling #LittleRiver #ExploreTennessee #XPLRTN #ExploreTN
