I had the honor of delivering remarks during the U.S. Southern Command change of command ceremony in Miami, where I officially relinquished command to Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly. It was a proud and meaningful moment, reflecting on the incredible work of our team and the strong partnerships we built throughout the region.

I had the opportunity to greet Sailors at the Joint Task Force Guantanamo detention facility. As commander of U.S. Southern Command, which includes JTF Guantanamo, I awarded coins to these Sailors to recognize their professionalism and diligence in their duties as camp guards.JTF Guantanamo is committed to conducting safe, humane, legal, and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. We also carry out intelligence collection, analysis, and dissemination to protect both detainees and personnel working within JTF Guantanamo facilities, all in support of the War on Terror.
I had the honor of presenting U.S. Navy Rear Adm. David B. Woods with the Defense Superior Service Medal for his outstanding service as commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo. The presentation took place during the change of command ceremony while I was serving as commander of U.S. Southern Command.

During my visit, we had productive discussions about the ongoing and future cooperation between the U.S. and Colombian armed forces. Minister Silva is visiting the United States at the invitation of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates as part of a routine engagement between defense leaders.
