If you’re a Black Eyed Peas fan, you’ve probably heard of “The Apl Song” from their Elephunk album. In the song, apl.de.ap recounts his life in the Philippines and uniquely tells his story as a Fil-am. The chorus — one of apl.de.ap’s signatures — is a sample of “Balita” by legendary Philippine folk rock band, Asin. apl lived a completely different life and had different struggles compared to the members of Asin, but it’s quite interesting that in sampling the song, he drew parallels to the same themes they explored. Aside from the obvious chorus, both songs shared nostalgic feelings about one’s homeland. Asin: “Dati-rati ang mga bukid ay kulay ginto/ Dati-rati'y ang mga ibon 'sinlaya ng tao…” apl: “Some would call it hell but to me, it was heaven/ God gave me the grace, amazing ways of living…” At the same time, both songs portrayed disappointment on how the “promised land” can be corrupted. Asin: “Mula nang makita ko ang lupang ito/ Nakita ko rin ang munting apoy sa puso ng tao/ Ginatungan ng mga kabulukan hanggang sa lumago/ Ngayon ang puso'y may takot sa lupang pinangako…” apl: “But back at home, man, life was a mess/ I guess sometimes life's stresses gets you down/ On your knees, oh brother I wish I could have helped you out…” Different songs from different artists with vastly different experiences.
