Desde su ingreso a Mayhem en 1988, Hellhammer ha sido el único miembro en aparecer en todos los álbumes de estudio de la banda, marcando con su batería cada etapa del black metal noruego. Su técnica impecable y su versatilidad lo llevaron a colaborar con proyectos como Arcturus, Dimmu Borgir, The Kovenant, Winds y muchos más, convirtiéndose en uno de los bateristas más influyentes del género.
