The great Ahmad Jamal in 1960 playing his composition Excerpt from the Blues (1955) with the two other members of his trio: Israel Crosby on the bass and Vernel Fournier on the drums. This was broadcast by CBS on September 15, 1960 for the show Jazz on 61. The other group performing in the studio that night was « Ben Webster and His Combo ». Ahmad Jamal started to play the piano at 3 as his uncle was challenging him to reproduce what he had just played: the young child did it perfectly. At 7, he studied the piano seriously with a professor, diving into classical music and jazz, or rather American classical music as he preferred to call it. Liszt was the composer he played the most back then; meanwhile, he was also discovering genius pianists like Art Tatum and Erroll Garner. At 14, he officially became a professional pianist as he became a member the American Federation of Musicians while the age limit was 16! He toured as a teenager all over the United States. At 16-18, his dream was to study at the Juilliard School [he would finally get there in 1962] but he chose to make a living instead, playing the piano in all the night clubs he could find. He initially formed a quartet (Four Strings) and then multiple trios. His playing style has been best described by Miles Davis who constantly mentioned Jamal as a major influence: « his concept of space, his light touch, his understatement, his phrasing blew me away. I liked the themes he played as well as his original compositions. I liked his lyricism at the piano, his style, the space he used for the voicing of his ensemble. » Miles would send his ensemble to Jamal concerts to have them grasp what he wanted. The admiration was mutual but never amounted to any collaboration. Ahmad Jamal left us in 2023, at 92. #ahmadjamal #jazz #jazzpiano #piano #America
