Daryl Wesley Phillip Vaz is a veteran Jamaican politician and current Member of Parliament for Western Portland, representing the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Born on December 15, 1963, in Saint Andrew Parish, he is the son of former Minister of Industry and Commerce, Douglas Vaz. Daryl Vaz’s early education took place at Mona Preparatory and Campion College in Jamaica, followed by studies at Miami Dade Community College in Florida. Before entering politics, he was active in the business sector, particularly in the automotive industry, where he served as the founding president of the Jamaica Used Car Dealers Association. Vaz began his political career in 1986 as a councillor in the Kingston & St. Andrew Corporation. He rose steadily within the JLP, eventually being elected as MP in 2007. Over the years, he has held several ministerial portfolios, including Information, Telecommunications, and most notably, Science, Energy, and Technology. His recent appointment expanded to include Telecommunications and Transport. Vaz has played a significant role in shaping Jamaica’s energy strategy, particularly in promoting renewable energy and technological integration.
